Framework

The Equity in Action Model

Last updated: November 2026

What is the Equity in Action Model?

The Equity in Action Model is a six-element framework created by Celeste Warren of CRW Diversity that helps leaders examine how their decisions, behaviors, and organizational systems shape the experiences and opportunities of the people they lead. Its elements are Awareness, Access, Advocacy, Action, Accountability, and Empowerment.

It moves leaders from good intentions to everyday leadership practice. Equity does not become real simply because an organization believes in it; it becomes real through the decisions leaders make every day.

The six elements and a question to try for each

  1. Element 1

    Awareness

Understand how assumptions, experiences, and organizational patterns influence decisions.

Try asking: Which assumptions shaped my last hiring or promotion call?

  2. Element 2

    Access

Examine who has access to information, opportunities, relationships, and resources.

Try asking: Who on my team hears about stretch assignments first?

  3. Element 3

    Advocacy

Use your influence to ensure talent, ideas, and perspectives aren't overlooked.

Try asking: Whose work should I name in the next leadership meeting?

  4. Element 4

    Action

Turn awareness and good intentions into deliberate leadership decisions.

Try asking: What will I decide differently this week?

  5. Element 5

    Accountability

Look beyond intentions and pay attention to outcomes.

Try asking: What do the outcomes show, regardless of what we intended?

  6. Element 6

    Empowerment

Create the conditions for people to contribute, grow, and use their voices.

Try asking: Where can people on my team speak up without risk?

Using the model in your organization

Where the model comes from

Celeste Warren developed the Equity in Action Model from nearly four decades in human resources and organizational leadership, including 28 years at a Fortune 100 company and 10 years leading global diversity and inclusion. It reflects a lesson from that career: we have to examine the systems around people, not only the people.
